Essar Steel India (ESTL) Senior executives Dr M Venkatraman, Sr VP-Product Development & Marketing, and Santosh Mundhada, Head-Plate Mill, represented Essar in the meet. Dr Venkatraman presented a paper on ‘Specialty steel for Indian Defence applications’. In his paper at the seminar, Dr Venkatraman suggested some major procedural guidelines for procurement and indigenization efforts.

It was mentioned by the ministry that India is in the process of building 54 war ships equipped with latest technologies, 48 of which are going to be built indigenously in the country. The ships will be built with special steels to withstand the rigorous corrosive and adverse conditions in the sea.

With the capabilities and know-how to make these advanced corrosion-resistant steels for these ships, EStIL is today capable of supplying, state-of-the-art products to the armed forces matching international standards. Last year, it became the first private sector steel company in India to execute an order for Mazagaon Dock Shipyard, a PSU (Public Sector Undertaking) of the Government of India, for supply of steel plates for war ships. Currently, ballistic plates developed ESTL are undergoing field tests.
